This house serves as the office, first-level residence and meeting place for the organization.
Freedom House now has six homes next to one another in the Poplar Neighborhood near downtown Fort Wayne. Though the organization has grown in size over the years, its mission remains simple: to provide the alcoholic/addicted male with a supportive, secure environment that encourages him to remain sober and become self-supporting.
The key to success, however, lies within the residents themselves. Freedom House provides a safe atmosphere for recovery, but it’s up to each resident to do the hard work that turns recovery into reality.

Hope for the Hopeless
Imagine a place that helps transform a man from a desperate addict wreaking havoc in his home and town, to a sober citizen contributing to his family and community. Freedom House, Inc. provides adult men a structured environment where they learn how to live sober lives, free from alcohol and drugs. It also offers 12-step meetings six days a week that are open to the public. Some people call the Freedom House a halfway house. Others, including current and former residents and those who attend AA and CA meetings there, call it a beacon of hope.
“I first attended the Saturday morning AA meeting in November of 2000. There I found…a solidarity among a group of men and women with a profound message of hope.” Mike M., AA member, sober since 1999

Humble Beginnings.
In 1987, two men from Fort Wayne, Indiana, were newly sober and desperate to stay that way. They decided one way to do that would be to help other men in the same situation. From that, Freedom House was born.
Since then, the Freedom House has evolved into a thriving community that exists to help adults become sober, responsible citizens. Hundreds of people support one another within this community: residents, staff, board members, AA- and CA-meeting attendees, and those whose lives intersect with each of these people. The Freedom House has become a lifeline of hope to anyone who wants sobriety above all else.

We offer hope
for a lifetime of recovery.
Why is it called Freedom House?
In the book Alcoholics Anonymous, the phrase “freedom from bondage” appears more than once. This describes how the 12 steps of AA can relieve an individual from the physical, emotional and spiritual bondage of alcoholism. The founders of Freedom House wanted the name to transmit the hope and vision of a sober life. They would be pleased at what Freedom House has become.
“It meant freedom, friendship, kindness, hope but most of all it was all about recovery and sobriety thanks to a God of my understanding.”
Robert H., AA member, sober since 1989
